Health insurance for foreigners in the Czech Republic
Moving to Czechia, studying here or extending your stay? I can help you understand your insurance options and review the conditions for your situation.
Consultations are also available in English.
Public or private insurance?
Eligibility depends on your residence status, employment and other legal conditions, not nationality alone. Permanent residence, certain employment situations or special protection statuses may qualify you for the public system.
A long-term residence permit alone does not automatically qualify an adult for public health insurance.
Insurance for your residence permit
Some long-term visa and residence applications require proof of travel health insurance. Whether urgent and necessary care or comprehensive cover is required also depends on where you apply and how long you will stay.
Check the required document according to the instructions of the Ministry of Interior.
Children and family
Since 2024, children under 18 with a long-term residence permit are included in public health insurance. A long-term visa is not the same as a residence permit.
Check the registration and payment of insurance premiums directly with the health insurance company.
What we will review together
- Your reason for staying, the length of your stay and your existing cover.
- Covered care, exclusions, waiting periods and any deductible.
- Policy conditions for pregnancy, childbirth, children and chronic conditions.
- Required documents, deadlines and continuity of cover.
This is a general overview, not confirmation of entitlement or acceptability of documents. Check the current requirements and exceptions with the Ministry of the Interior and the relevant health insurance companies. The scope and price of commercial insurance depends on the specific offer and insurance conditions.

Is travel insurance sufficient for a long-term residence permit?
Depending on the type of application, the place of filing and whether you are a participant in public insurance. Necessary and urgent care is not the same as comprehensive health insurance. Check the required document with the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
How much does health insurance for foreigners cost?
The price depends on age, length of stay, extent of care and insurance conditions. The universal price and automatic admission to insurance is not promised; first we will look at your situation.
Can we have the consultation in English?
Yes. We will arrange in Czech or English, personally in Olomoucia, Brno, Prague or Ostrava, possibly online.
Do I need private health insurance with temporary protection?
Temporary protection has special rules on public health insurance. First, check your classification and insurance obligations with the health insurance company; commercial insurance is not automatically compulsory for every stranger.
